Sound specifics : Harman Kardon Soundsticks III
First off, I would say that I'm somewhere between your mean person and an audiophile. I never of course used to pay much attentiveness or care about the quality of the sound fertilization of speakers until a few years ago. Also, I'm I fan of crisp highs and big lows. Unfortunately I've been unable to fully test the low end with these, as I'm in an apartment currently.
I came from a set of nice Jbl speakers (that I think were Msrp at ~$200) that I got at OfficeMax 10 years ago, on clearance, for ~$30. These became the proper by which I judged other sound systems, rightly or wrongly, because I opinion they sounded first-rate to every other computer speakers I'd heard, as well as most mean home sound systems/speakers. (I've never gone beyond a $300 receiver or $300 7.1 system, so I can't say). I've also had past experiences with other computer speakers that have been underwhelming, so I was still questioning either I would of course be happy with these. But, I purchased them because they were very very rated based on my explore in this price range.
When I first got them set up and volume-adjusted, I knew that they were at least as good as the speakers I came from, which was a relief. I opinion that my Jbl speakers were very crisp and clear compared to other speakers I've heard but these were absolutely nicer, and able to capture parts of songs that got lost in the noise of my old speakers. allinclusive I was pretty happy with my purchase. I checked out the Amazon reviews and saw a quote by an audiophile, who gave some recommendations to place the speakers a few feet apart and aim them directly at your ears. This advice was very well-taken, and I went from being happy with how they sound, to being approximately *stunned* at how they sound now. Keep in mind that I'm not a complete audiophile, so maybe my perspective on this is naive. I dunno. I'd imagine audiophiles would be relatively happy with these, and your mean person with a decent ear would think they sound fantastic.
If you are using something like Winamp, I would recommend Stereotool or something to add some clarity to the sound to get remarkable crispness. I'm running Linux and using Audacious as my audio player, and I'm using the Crystallizer plugin, and setting the preamp to 3.0 db. That's all I need to be of course happy with my sound with these speakers. ;)
So, if you're tossing colse to the idea of purchasing these, I can say that I have been impressed with them, after having purchased them in the same situation.
